Low Carb Diet Tips
I want to take a minute to offer up some of my best low carb dieting tips, especially when it comes to shopping. Shopping for a low carb diet is tough sometimes because you’re always being tempted, and it gets even harder when you’re trying to find replacements for your favorite temptations. Just the other day I found myself staring into the refrigerator case at boxes of delicious looking cheesecake, just to see if maybe they had come out with a low carb version. They hadn’t so I kept on moving. A lot of your favorite snacks are just not available in low carb versions yet.
But I actually think that that is one of the best tips on dieting I can give you when you’re trying to live a low carb lifestyle: you have to make it an adventure. Always be looking for new and exciting things. You don’t have to be afraid of looking at the cheesecakes, as long as you are sure that you mind understands that you are only really looking for a low carb cheesecake. This can be difficult to understand at first but trust me, you will find your own rhythm and start to excel at this process. You will also lose weight dieting this way, because you have got it in your mind that cheating is not an option. Instead, you are looking for better and better solutions to your low carb snack desires.. Makes perfect sense, right?
That is exactly how I found the low carb breads that I enjoy. Did you know that there is great low carb bread available at regular grocery stores? I wouldn’t know about them if I hadn’t had that fearless pioneering spirit that allowed me to scour the shelves and read all the labels in search of hidden gems. And I did actually find some great gems. Trader Joes carries a bread that is not even labeled as low carb! It is marketed as a sprouted seven-grain bread, but it weighs in at only 4 grams of carbohydrate per slice. That is tough to beat. I think the way the grain is sprouted before being made into bread helps to reduce the carb count by letting the natural enzymes eat up the carbs as fuel for the growing young plant. But be careful, because not every sprouted grain bread is low carb. You can’t be afraid to read the labels.
There is another great mass-market low carbohydrate bread sold under the brand Healthy Life, and I can find that one at my local chain supermarket. It comes in at 5-6 grams per slice, depending on what kind you buy, but you can get full-fledged low carb white bread, italian style bread with the nice chewy crust, whole wheat, or flax seed. So there are definitely some great options but you have to go out looking for them. they really don’t fall in your lap unless you subscribe to my RSS feed and keep coming back to my blog here!
I have not yet found much in the way of low carb cakes, although when you are out the Cheesecake Factory does have a low carb cheese cake that is quite good. You can easily make a low carb cheesecake at home, however, using fresh ingredients like berries and chocolate that could really add some variety to your low carb dessert menu. The one you made at home would probably be a healthier low carb snack than the purchased variety.
You can also experiment with baking techniques, such as using almond flour or coconut flour instead of regular all purpose wheat flour. They are a little different to work with so you will need to experiment on your own. It is a matter of trial and error. But I will tell you that I have succeeded in making delicious almond-flour pancakes. I will post a recipe here in a separate article.
